Is there a way to find out if you have a 401k out there at a old job?

I would call the company and speak to the human resource department.

If nothing else, they should be able to give you the phone number for your plan's administrator.  They should be able to tell you.

They went bankrupt about six months after I was layed off.......Im not quite sure about how they work.  Wasnt sure if you could just lose them or it stays in your name until you claim it.....

The first thing to do is to figure out who your plan's adminstrator.  If you have an old statement or can call a co worker who might know it will give you a place to start.

If you haven't gotten a statment since you left, I'm not very optimistic.

If nothing else, here's a site about 401k issues.  They have some forums there that might help..
