Substance abuse help

OK, last night we had a insident with someone in our family......
I need to know if there is somewhere.......you can take a person "if they agree" that they can walk into and not get back out for thirty or more days to help with drug abuse.........She also has mental prob. but her local police dep. told me last night, she has to get substance abuse fixed first...

Found out last night my twenty seven year old sister attacked a twelve year old, busted out someones car windows, and was drunk and on crack............
Im still in shock.....

This particular family member lives in Virginia like me.......
If there is not a place where she will be stuck for awhile, I need a name of a state run facility (she has no insurance) in a near by state for that kind of help, so it will be harder for her to get friends to pick her up and bring them back home, and she might stay longer.....

Maby New Jersey or Pens.....some where, far enough, her "bad friends" wont be able to get to her....

Havnt slept in 48hrs......so I hope this makes since.......

Ive been on comp. trying to do searches, but not coming up with much info....

where are you located at you can call 911 and they can take her not lock her up but can take her to where she want to go are you can look up in phone book to as long as they are willing to go in on there own the cops will not lock her up

I am in Connecticut which is probably too far away from you. But here there are places that will lock you up against your will until they see you fit to leave. I don't know if you have it there but have you tried Infoline? The number is 211

When you get time please pm me with name of the places you are talking about.......I discused it with the family, and we are willing to go as far as it takes..... I spent hours last night talking to cops, and state hospitals here, and they all sudjest sending her out of state where she might stay longer, or trying to force her in somewhere......... Im researching now on state laws, and if she lives in virginia, if it is possible to go to a different state and there hospital..........It is amazing to me, the laws they have that protect people ...... legaly she can walk around high and on hard core drugs and unless she stated she was going to kill herself or someone else, cops wont touch her......errr

YOU are a true angel, I just got off the phone with the virginia human rights, and they said there is nowhere here that she can go in that she cant just turn around and check herself out within a few days......I keep hitting brick walls. They said unless she got caught with posession, then the courts.........might.....might make her go......but chances arnt good. And I dont see her getting caught no time soon.....

I sent you a PM with some information that I found quickly. I am still looking around and calling. A friend of mine was in a similar situation when we were younger. There has to be someplace that she can go where she can't check herself out. Yes, if she got caught they might make her go but that is not a definite. They might also just give her outpatient treatment which does not seem like it would help.

I am on the phone now. I will PM you some more information when I get it.

Another question...You say she has mental problems? Is she suicidal? If so the emergency room should admit her, and they can treat both problems at the same time. I don't know why the police told you that she has to get drug treatment beforehand because that sounds like a bunch of bull.

all the hospitals I know of will admit someone who is currently suicidal and/or experiencing a drug overdose. They should be able to tell you how to apply for insurance for people with low or no incomes to get treatment or at least refer you guys to free clinics or clinics that base their fees off sliding scales. Just have to ask. Try contacting some social service units of hospitals and ask. I don't know about there in Virginia, but were I'm from all the hospitals are like that. Also try contacting some rehab clinics, tell them she doesn't have insurance, ask how to apply for low income insurance or if they no of any rehab places that will take her. All the rehab places I know of will help you Thur the steps. Also, as for intervention, which it sounds like she needs, any decent rehab center will have intervention specialists that will work with you and your family to set her up to get her in and work with all her problems, not just one thing per say.

I PM'ed you again Holly with more information. I also called my local hospital, and they said that they should admit her no matter what state you are in and they won't let her out. They have a special floor for those patients with locked doors, etc. They will help you and your family apply for Medicaid. Your hospital is really your best bet. They will admit her and won't let her out as far as I know at least here they won't.

Hi holly...sorry to hear you are going through this right now. Unfortunately, if she does not want help, forcing her into it (by her family) may make her rebel more and close doors to you in the future. However, you said the police were involved. If they pursue the charges against her, perhaps, if this is a first offense, they would court order rehab. That way, the courts are making her do the stint in rehab, not her family.

I deal with this daily at my job...i am not just talking out of my a**...The hardest thing for an addict to learn is when to get help. They look at it as a cost to benefit ratio. When the costs of using outweigh the benefits, that is usually the best time to seek help.

If she goes into detox, and then realizes she has court charges pending as a result, she may seek further help.

In the state of Pennsylvania, the local county Drug and Alcohol program run through the County MH/MR program will obtain detox and rehab funding...but, usually, only if the addict is seeking the help voluntarily.

I don't mean to be the downer of the group, but the best thing that you can do is remain supportive and honor her choices, even if you don't like them.

holly im so sry hun but sometime you have to let them hit rock bottom before they realize what they are doing it hurt really bad but she will have to realize that her family love her to much but some ppl giving her money are any other means to get her stuff well just helping her is all we had to finally cut son off and let him hit it for sure but he was really close to hitting rock real close till he finally came to us and cried he needed help it cost us but we got are son back so what ever i can do to help you get throught this were all her for you ok but just have to do what it is but the whole family has to agree to it and believe me in one are another she will come around funds cut off and no means to money but just remember were her for you ok God Bless you and your family

wow yes that state has some messed up laws. All I can say is then if she has kids, protect them by contacting cps or you guys some how get legal custody of her kids if she has any and just her go

Having dealt with family abuse it won't work until she decides she wants to get better and with the mental issues up have a very complicated problem. Do not enable her her. If you can't get help for her check out al-anon they can help you with the issues this causes you. I wish you well and will say a prayer. My brother did seek help but too late. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes the odds are just against you. I hope things work out. There is always hope and never give up
