Turn off smooth fonts.

How to change the Font Smoothing Settings in Windows XP
Minimize all applications so that you can see the desktop.
Right-click anywhere on the desktop background (not on an icon).
In the resulting pop-up menu, choose Properties. This will open the Display Properties dialog box.
In the Display Properties dialog box, select the Appearance tab.
In the Appearance tab, click the Effects button (lower right).
In the Effects dialog box, check the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" uncheck it to disable font smoothing.
When you have finished setting these properties, click the OK buttons in both the Effects and Display Properties dialog boxes.

There are no tabs.  A theme box comes up and that is it.  I click Properties, and it says Display Properties.  Then it has the Theme.  That is all.  >:(

I know what you are talking about as I have seen it on another computer I had.  But no that doesn't come up on this one.  I just get theme, and no tabs on top.

I have windows xp and this is what I do:

1. right click on open area on desktop and left click on properties.
2.  Click the tab at the top of the box that opens that say appearance.
3.  Click the box that say effects (in the right corner) I've pointed the arrow towards it.

4.  When the next box opens, look at the second option down and make sure that is unclicked.  It is the one that says "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts.

Hope this helps out some

You guys must think I am so stupid.  LOL  I wish you could see that I am not getting the box like you have.  Let me see if I can do a screenshot.  Never tried that.

Go to "My Computer"  then double click "Control Panel" and then double click "Display" that will bring up same box.
OR
Click "Start" then click "Control Panel" then "Display"
