While you're taking the time to enjoy these wonderful meals made from SPAM, take the time to download from iTunes the song "Spam" by Save Ferris... excellent song to go along with your meal!

Shady Lady

I've never ate SPAM. What does it actually taste like? I'm not joking. I really have never ate it.

sonic126

Introduced in 1937, the name "Spam" was chosen in the 1930s when the product, whose original name—"Hormel Spiced Ham"—was far less memorable, began to lose market share. The name was chosen from multiple entries in a naming contest. A Hormel official once stated that the original meaning of the name Spam was "Shoulder of Pork and hAM". According to writer Marguerite Patten in Spam – The Cookbook, the name was suggested by Kenneth Daigneau, brother of the Hormel vice president and an actor. The current official explanation is that the name is a portmanteau of "SPiced hAM", and that the originator was given a $100 prize for coming up with the name.

Other explanations of the origin of the term include the definitions "Spiced Pork And haM" and "SPAre hAM"; there are also some jocular definitions, such as "Synthetically Produced Artificial Meat", "Some Parts Are Meat", "Specially Processed American Meat", "Someone's Pigs Are Missing", "Stuff Posing As Meat", or "Spare Parts and Animal Mucus", amongst a multitude of other similar parody names

The taste is like Deviled Ham.  >:D but is a solid instead of a spread.

so basically its salty in taste or at least it is to me. Fried up though its passable as a breakfast food.

sonic

ps if you havent tried deviled ham, its the spread you see in little cans and has a devils fork on the lable, Try it with ritz crackers.

Island Teriyaki Bites

Ingredients

1 (12-ounce) can of SPAM® Lite, diced
1 Tbsp sesame oil
2 cups Hawaiian Style Teriyaki Sauce and Marinade, divided
1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained well
3 Tbsp chopped green onions
¼ cup finely shredded carrots
½ tsp fresh grated gingerroot
32 Phyllo dough sheets
Butter flavored nonstick cooking spray
2 Tbsp jalapeno jelly, melted

Cooking Directions

Marinate diced SPAM® in 1 cup of the teriyaki sauce for 30 minutes. Drain SPAM® and sauté in sesame oil for 3-4 minutes or until lightly browned. Add the pineapple, green onions, carrots and ginger to the SPAM®. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough onto a clean work surface.* Lightly spray phyllo sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Top with a second sheet of phyllo dough and lightly spray with nonstick spray. Cut each sheet into three 2-inch wide strips. Place about a tablespoon of the SPAM™ mixture on one end of each strip. Fold dough diagonally, up and over the filling until a triangle-shape is formed. Lightly spray the triangle with nonstick spray. Repeat with remaining phyllo sheets and SPAM®. Place triangles on a lightly sprayed baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Lightly brush each triangle with jalapeño jelly. Serve with remaining teriyaki sauce for dipping. Makes 4 dozen.

* Mini phyllo shell version: If desired, you may fill 3 (2.1-ounce) packages mini phyllo shells with the SPAM™ mixture. Place on baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 8 minutes or until hot. Top with jalapeño jelly and serve. Makes 45 mini shells.

LMAO

I haven't tried Deviled ham either. Thank you for the info.
I had never eaten mashed potatoes out of a box until my 2nd marriage. As a matter of fact he's the same one that got me to try Hamburger Helper for the first time. There I was 30 yrs old ... reading the directions on the box.
I'm hooked now. I only  make "rice-a-roni" from scratch 3 or 4 times a year.

Yum, I love fried spam on toast w/mayo & tomatos (best w/freah garden tomatoes tho!).  I've never thought of having it any other way, lol.   :)

don't know why that word is starred out, but its another word for cooked browned bread in that little appliance that sits on my counter, lol.

Bree

I love Spam dishes too.  You can not believe what you can do with Spam until you become a freshman in college and all your friends come over to your apartment to eat.  And I never had any complaints.  Thanks Oscar and Sonic... :)

Then you've obviously A. Never went through a hurricane or B. Lived in a trailer park. :o

JUST KIDDING!!!

Actually, it's not bad as long as you don't think about what's in it.  And with all of Homer's WONDERFUL recipes, it's still best sliced and fried in butter on bread with a little mayo.

During Hurricane Wilma, people were FIGHTING for the last can of fat and sodium free Spam (even worse than leaded stuff) at the markets.  It was hysterical!  There was nothing on the shelves but that low fat crap and canned beets.  You'd be suprised how many peeps were pushing around carts with 10 cans of beets and powdered off brand crystal lite.
