Okay, I just got off the phone with AOL and they said that now ALL AOL members who connect via high speed can get their AOL service FREE.  The guy I spoke to said that this only came into effect in the last couple days that EVERYONE with highspeed can get it free.  So, those interested can call AOL Cancellation AGAIN 888-265-8008 and tell them you want to get AOL for free.  You will not have access to dialup through AOL with this plan.

I asked the guy if you had to be a member for a certain amount of time and he said no, but he did tell me I've been a member for 9 years and 3 months.  Granted, most of those years were free (7 of them to be exact) but still, 2 years 3 months at $19.95... YIKES!!!

Sheesh, let's see if they still give some of us a hard time.

How did you have AOL free for 7 years? lol

I was a Community Leader (volunteered).  I taught classes to new members, worked Keyword:HELP, hosted chat rooms, taught others how to host chat rooms.  I interviewed and recruited members to be chat hosts or tech support or homework helpers, etc.  You name it, I did it.  I hosted message boards.  The most horrid time was hosting the news boards right after 9-11.  That was a nightmare.  For awhile you saw the best in people, then it didn't take long for the ugliness to start showing.  I did so many things there I can't remember them all, and I didn't do them all at the same time either.  But it was such a good time.  The CL program was a nice, close knit community of volunteers.  The only thing we got out of it was free AOL and the occasional 'perk'.  We got mugs, t-shirts and cd's and cd cases... we got anti-virus software free (before they were offering it free to everyone), and access to 'behind the scenes' areas and tools on AOL.
You got me thinking about it, so I went to Keyword:Leaders which is where you used to go ( I THINK) to apply, but it didn't pull up.  Don't know why, don't know if they no longer take volunteers since things are getting so bad for them.  Anyway..... if it weren't for the friends I made and all that I learned there it wouldn't have been worth it.
It's amazing how much has changed in the last 2 1/2 years though.  I have forgotten so many simple, basic things.  I feel outdated and embarrassed when I have to ask for help here on this forum, to do things that everyone else takes for granted.  :::sighs::: Oh well.... so much for the stroll down memory lane!

Well it's time for someone to give back to you...since you've given so much to so many. Thanks for being helpful. You sound like a great person, and don't be afraid to ask for help. You should know better, many asked you at one point in time. :)

Thanks, that's very sweet of you!  So, I guess you're volunteering to be my 'go to' gal?  :pp

AOL has announced it on the welcome page... here's a small bit of what they posted:

7. When Can I Get AOL for Free?
If you already have an alternative way to connect to the Internet, either by dial-up or broadband, you can move to the free AOL plan and continue to access your AOL e-mail, software, and security features. To change your current AOL plan, simply call Member Services at 1-800-984-6207.

8. Does This Mean I Can Stop Paying for AOL?
That depends. You can choose the free AOL option and stop paying for Internet access and customer support from AOL if you have another way to get online. Once you're online, you can continue to use AOL's software, email and security features at no charge. We will, however, continue to offer dial-up and high-speed (cable or DSL) plans for those who need a connection to the Internet and customer support.

I found this on some tech page today :

About Time: AOL Goes Free
from the last-walls-come-tumbling-down dept
After much speculation, AOL announced today that it would finally bite the bullet, and become a free portal, complete with free AOL email addresses for anyone who wants one. The company says it now wants to exploit the "explosive rise in broadband usage and online advertising", though, of course, it's already missed out on much of the explosion. At least now the company can be meaningfully compared to competitors, and those on the inside can get better measures of their success. As for marrying content with distribution, the initial goal of the AOL-Time Warner merger, there they still have some work to do.

Apparently they have been offering free service to some people, at their own discrimination, for some time.  Now it's for everyone.
