As for the rolled up socks...my mom said my dad used to do roll 'em up and throw em on the floor and she stopped washing them. He came to her one morning because he had no socks to wear, and she told him that had he unrolled them and placed them in the hamper like he was supposed to, they would have been washed. Needless to say he does that now.
