(CNN) -- Jenna Bush, President and Laura Bush's daughter, is engaged, the White House said Thursday.

Henry Hager and Jenna Bush, pictured in May 2006, got engaged Wednesday.

1 of 2  Jenna Bush, 25, is marrying Henry Hager, 28, a former White House aide who used to work with Karl Rove.

His father, John Hager, is the chairman of the Virginia Republican Party.

"President and Mrs. George W. Bush are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jenna Bush, to Mr. Henry Hager, son of the Honorable and Mrs. John H. Hager of Richmond, Virginia," press secretary Sally McDonough said in a statement.

Hager proposed in Maine on Wednesday, according to the first lady's office. He is returning to the University of Virginia in the fall, where he is getting his master's degree in business. He went to Wake Forest University for his undergraduate studies, The Associated Press reported.

Jenna Bush earned an English degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004. She taught at a Washington elementary school for a year and half and worked in Latin America as an intern for UNICEF, AP reported.

She is launching a book tour this fall to promote "Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope," about a 17-year-old Latin American girl living with HIV-AIDS.

The couple have been dating for nearly two years, according to The Washington Post.

When asked if they would marry in the Rose Garden, McDonough said: "They have not set any details, date or place," AP reported.

Eight presidential daughters have had White House weddings: Maria Monroe (1820), Elizabeth Tyler (1842), Nellie Grant (1874), Alice Roosevelt (1906), Jessie Wilson (1913), Eleanor Wilson (1914), Lynda Bird Johnson (1967) and Tricia Nixon (1971).

Lucy Johnson Nugent was married while her father was in office, but the ceremony took place at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

There was a White House wedding in 1994, but it didn't involve a president's child. Hillary Clinton's brother, Tony Rodham, married Nicole Boxer in the Rose Garden.

Only one son was married in the White House -- John Adams, son of President and Mrs. John Quincy
