Here is some general info to help you understand how this works.

Game Play Basics

The object of Yahoo! Sports Pro Football Pick'em is to accumulate as many points as possible by correctly picking the winning team in each of the games played during the regular season.

Each of your wins will count as one point in a basic group, or multiple points if your group uses confidence points. Weekly points are tallied, and the player finishing with the highest season total wins the group.

Please remember that when point spreads are involved, picking the winning team may not result in a correct selection. If the team you select is favored by 10 points, they have to win by at least 11 points for your pick to be accurate.

If you believe a 10-point favorite will win by fewer than 10 points (or lose outright), you should select the underdog to win the game if your group uses point spreads.



Point Spreads

A point spread is the predicted scoring difference between a game's two opponents. If you choose the team that's favored, they must win by more than the spread number in order for you to get credit for a correct pick. If you choose the underdog team, they have to lose by less than the spread number in order for you to get credit for the correct pick.

So, if you pick Pittsburgh and they're favored to beat Dallas by five points, Pittsburgh must win the game by six or more points in order for you to get credit for the win. Otherwise, if Dallas loses by less than five, you wouldn't get credit for the win. If Pittsburgh wins by exactly five points, the game is a push, and no users get credit for a victory.

Yahoo! Sports uses the point spreads provided by the Associated Press. These spreads will be updated each day. Unless there are Thursday games, Thursday's lines will serve as the game's official spread. In weeks with Thursday games, Wednesday's line will be the official spread.



Confidence Points

Confidence Points are used to give a different weight to each game in a given week. You'll assign a point value (from 1 to 15 if there are 15 games, 1 to 14 if there are 14 games, etc.) to each game based on how strongly you feel about the accuracy of your selection. If your selection is correct, you'll receive points equal to the confidence-point value you associated with that game.

So, if you pick Pittsburgh to beat Dallas and assign the game a confidence point value of 15, you'd get 15 points for a correct pick, but no points if Dallas wins. You don't lose points for an incorrect selection.

Each week's points will be tallied, and the player finishing with the highest total at the end of the year will be the winner of the group.

Each confidence point value may be used only once per week. So, during a 15-game week, after you have assigned 15 points to a game, your next highest available value is 14 points.



Tiebreak System

In any week where two or more players finish with the same number of points, here's the system that'll be used to break the tie:

Closest to the total points for Monday night's game.
Closest to the home team points for Monday night's game.
Closest to the road team points for Monday night's game.
Closest to the total points for Sunday night's game.
Closest to the home team points for Sunday night's game.
Closest to the road team points for Sunday night's game.
Closest to the city whose team scores the most points.
Closest to the city whose team scores the fewest points.
Whichever user had more points in the previous week (or the week before that if still tied, etc.).
You'll be able to determine each weekly winner by looking at the Weekly Performance page, where the person winning the week will be shown in bold.

Actually with the way this contest works you might be better off not knowing much about football. I used to get mad as hell at work because the secretary who picked her teams by jersey color would win quite often. LOL
