have windows vitsa i have the fix for it i was having trouble yesterday would not fin a puzzle well i started
to shut down programs running in the backround and when i was done shutting everthing down the helper
was solving the puzzles in 1.25 min omg like a speed demon .the most important thing to shut down is if you
are using dreamscape as a backround the one that moves change it to a solid color and it should work great!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip!  I have Vista, and didn't have a Sherlock problem, but then I always shut down everything running in the background as soon as I get a computer.  Some of those things are real resource hogs and you're right, they do cause interference problems.

How do you know which items are safe to shut down?

You should be able to shutdown most things however do not turn off your AV/Firewall

If your not sure what something is you can always google it.

Yes google is your friend but try not to shut down anything that says it was started by NETWORK, SYSTEM or LOCAL

you might have stuff still starting up like auto update programs that update programs you install or like weather tickers or news banners stuff like that could be shut down.

ALSO remember not many people know about this in vista but if you open the program folder to a program that might not be running right you can right click the .exe file go to properties then click the compatibility tab and you can set the program to run in a windows xp environment that has helped some of my programs run better. By now tho most companies have made vista compatible programs as with badgehelp they have upgraded most of their autos for vista.

AND if you want me to get more technical instead of shutting down processes you can go to RUN and type msconfig then when it opens go to the startup tab and you can uncheck stuff to not start when windows starts.

I was only referring to the stuff people have running in their system tray. Most computers come preloaded with junk that runs out of the system tray on startup. Most of them aren't necessary and only use up your RAM. I've seen people with 20 or 30 things running out of there and then they don't understand why their pc's don't work as well anymore.

I am totally thrown by this - I have no idea what Dreamscape is and when you say "background" are you talking about a screensaver or a wallpaper? Can you explain?

I have Vista and removed about all I can from the computer I use to play Pogo during the day for the startup - I even go into my resources and remove my apple and messenger before playing since I am not using anything ipod   :{ or IM'ing while playing. Since it does allow you to partition I even thought about setting a partition just for pogo but that would be yet another step I would have to take. I do not want to add more RAM since this computer really is only for Pogo but it is no secret that Vista turns one step into four. I think Pogo took lessons from them in their remake of Dominoes - It takes so many clicks before you can play now.

This is how I have always done it.  Just remove the check by things I don't want starting up everytime I turn on my computer.

In all if you have vista on your pc you should have a nice video card and at least 1-2GB ram which would be more than enough to run lots of stuff with no problem. I have 2GB and i run nero, pogo, usually winamp, and an auto with no trouble and i also have other system services running. sometimes i even browse in between rounds on ie while playing pogo. The amount of RAM shouldnt affect your auto the auto uses very little system resources its pogo that will use the bulk. if this didnt answer your question i wasnt sure what ya was asking.!!

ADDED: actually right now i have all that running and my system is only using 19% of its capabilities!

I really wanted to know what Dreamscape was and why it would be using resources while you play.

hi disney its a backround that runs on vista and its 3d it moves and uses memory up that is why
when you use a helper you should trun off as much as allowed for best performance

thank you

Thanks orion42, for the answer.  O0

I will go over to my eBay computer one of these days and play around with it and see about it now that I know. It is all of 6 feet away from me but it does not even have badges on it so it is really hard to scoot my chair over there. The fact that the one over there has something called revenue involved with it does make it hard to ignore  ::
