Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has decreed that Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is not welcome at training camp.

Glazer reports that the move is seen as an opportunity for the league office to take more time to assess the facts of the accusations of dog fighting leveled at Vick. Glazer reports that the league could give Vick "an extensive punishment" for his ties to dog fighting, and that Vick could be forced to sit out the year.

Glazer's report comes on the heels of Fox 5 in Atlanta reporting that Vick will take a leave of absence. The entirety of the Fox 5 report was, "The NFL says that Michael Vick will be taking a leave of absence."

Pretty much everyone except Vick agrees that a leave of absence would be the best solution. It would allow Vick to devote his full attention to his legal defense, and it would allow the NFL and the Falcons to avoid having animal-rights activists picketing Falcons training camp. But apparently Vick disagreed, and now Glazer reports that Goodell has made the decision for him.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has ordered Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to stay away from the team's training camp until league officials complete a review of his indictment on federal dogfighting charges.

In a letter to Vick today, Commissioner Goodell said: "While it is for the criminal justice system to determine your guilt or innocence, it is my responsibility as commissioner of the National Football League to determine whether your conduct, even if not criminal, nonetheless violated league policies, including the Personal Conduct Policy."

Vick will not forfeit his preseason pay during his excused absence from training camp.

Commissioner Goodell also directed the Falcons today to withhold any contemplated team discipline regarding the Vick matter until the NFL review is completed.

The Falcons will hold a press conference on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the offices of Arthur Blank, where the team owner will discuss the Vick situation.

i second that DA BEARS :&....i think this is the best bears team since 85 this year, hester has been pretty impressive offensive so far in camp...and c'mon...whose gonna get through that D?  ++    nfc anyway

To create a roster spot for their first-round draft choice, the Lions shut their second-rounder down for the season.

On Friday morning, rookie quarterback Drew Stanton was placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury six days ago.

Though Stanton would have been healthy in time for the regular season, most of his real work in 2007 was going to come in the preseason. 

As a practical matter, the move allows the Lions to keep both Dan Orlovsky and J.T. O'Sullivan on the roster this year.
