This same thing was happening on my computer recently and I took the issue to my IT guy at work. He explained in layman terms that this file is created at start-up by the computer and used for the programs I open up. And disappears when I shut down, therefore 'virtual'.
He also advised me that mine may have become corrupted and gave me the following instructions to see if it might help. Well it did, so I will pass this along. Now mind you it was based on my C:\  having 145 GB size with 129 Free space.
Click Start; Right click My Computer; Click Properties; Click Advanced Tab; Click Settings under Performance; Click Advanced Tab; Click Change at bottom; put a dot beside Custom Size; In first box type in 1024 and in second box type 2048; Click Set and then ok, ok, ok and Restart your computer.
Hope this will help you too. Good luck!
