I avoid that day like it's the Black Plague.  No deal is worth it.  Besides, these days, you can get the same deals sitting in front of your computer, if you're determined enough.

I can't believe that they are opening doors on Thanksgiving at 6 pm in some stores around here.  Those poor employees don't even get a holiday anymore.  My heart goes out to them.   The public is SO hard to deal with normally, nevermind under such circumstances as kicking off the Christmas shopping season.

HAHA I may be nuts but I'm not that nutty  giggle2.gif  I haven't went shopping on black friday in years & have no plans to.

Hi Gran, I hope I don't have to go out that day.

Good Luck if you do. Youve got about 5 weeks left total before the big day.  Lin  santamail.gif

No matter what Black Friday is my tradition but....

This year I have no money at all for gifts for my twins who will be 11 on Dec 1st.

My sons made a list up asking for a pack of gum and that is about all I can afford.

I hope you have some famiy and friends to help out. Don't be shy, and let them know your situation.
This may be the happiest Chhristmas of all their total 11 years if you share this with others.
And if you belong to a Religious organization, they have help. Salvation Army may have items too.
There are a lot of people in your shoes and you may be pleasantly surprised what is out there.
But you need to talk to others and let them know. And another idea, if you're able to find any extra cash,
go to the thrift stores. They have lots of nice stuff hiding in the back of the shelves or hanging on the racks for clothes,
and sometimes a little cleaning and packing in a cleaver way works wonders.
Good Luck to you. Hugs, Lin embrace.gif

Yes, I think there are a lot of people that have to watch and be careful. Online shopping is so nice.
Congrats on getting your shopping all done too. Now you can decorate and enjoy.   Lin  Xmas Tree  deer1.gif

I worked in retail for 15 years before becoming a home health care aid.  15 Black Friday's, I did the opening shift.  15 years in a row I watched otherwise normal, happy anything goes people turn into blood thirsty savages over $10 video games.

I've watched people become aholes as they elbow, punch, kick and shove their way to the pile of 6 count $2 tube socks.

I've been screamed at, cussed out and told "You effing ruined my 2 year's Christmas" on black Friday because we sold out of $15 tricycles.  That would be in stock again that Tuesday afternoon.

I've witnessed a manager have her pony tail pulled so hard she was jerked to the ground and had to be hauled off by medics, get 5 stitches and miss 5 weeks of work all because she asked a bitch to wait 2 nano seconds for her to get change for a cashier who desperately needed some ones and 5's.

I've watched an electronics department employee get pinned up against the game case by a crowd of 15-20 people with no way out.  Why?  She was holding the last in store copy of the latest must have video game of the year.  After she threw it up in the air and dived for the ground in an attempt to crawl her way out, I watched 10 fully grown "adults" get into a knock down fist fight over said game.  Never mind that an employee employee was on the ground trying to crawl away. Having that video game was more important.  Thank god all she got was very dirty and shot nerves.

How do I spend the Friday after Turkey day?  I do my best to stay home.  I'll get my workout in at the gym, fill up a tank of gas and maybe go to the grocery store to pick up a few things we need to make good use of leftovers.

I went shopping once on Black Friday and I couldn't handle it. The crowds freaked me out and this is in NYC just walking the streets from boutique to boutique.  The idea of doing it in L.A. where so many people shop for a living and fill the parking lots year round already gives me a panic attack just thinking about it.

If I do go shopping this week it'll be on Saturday which is Shop Small day (shop small business) although I don't really buy gifts for people any more (adults anyway) except for my boyfriend, mom and stepdad.  I'd rather give money to charity which is why I have my cards printed stating that a donation has been given and then specify one of the charities I use.

I'm not a religious person but even I find the bastardization of Christmas with over the top and excessive gift giving to be sacrilege. Meanwhile it's people like me who are blamed for the secularization of this holiday instead if the Walmarts of the world who are forcing people to leave their families on Thanksgiving to open their doors early.

Do not want. Will not participate.

Not casting stones, just sharing my viewpoint.

P.S.  A lot of articles I've read this year state that bigger deals can be found by shopping earlier so you're better off not holding out until Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Its hard to believe how people can be!   no-no.gif rolleyes.gif

I tell my friends & family when they ask me what I want for Christmas, that the time & things we do all year long is enough for me & those little things add up & mean a lot, more than store stuff that I don't really need.  I'll spend black friday eating leftovers, with my family, & playing on the puter probably!  Darn if I'm going out in that mad rush of crazy people!   hysterical.gif

Please seek out agencies that will make sure your children have gifts for Christmas.   The Salvation Army does a excellent job with their program.  Many local churches  offer help.  I suspect we have something in common. I will not ask for myself but will ask for my children if needed.

contact toys for tots to learn how to sign up for the program.  Go to your local salvation army to ask when and how to sign up.

Visit the local Foodstamp/welfare office-they may know of a few groups handing out stuff.  Also talk to some food banks in your area-many of them have fast approaching deadlines (at least in my area) for some Christmas food baskets.

BTW-What state do you live in?

I think it was the last time I went out on Black Friday.... years ago.... when I was patiently waiting for a parking spot.  The person started to back out and, of course, was coming out toward me, making me wait a bit longer among parking spot wolverines.  Because of this, someone who had come up from the other direction, sneaked in and took the spot.  When I rolled down my window and said, "Excuse me but I've been waiting for that spot.", they responded with, "Tough sh*t.  Merry f--kin' Christmas", then laughed and walked away.  That person was lucky to have a windshield left on her car.  I know it's cynical but the Christmas spirit dies under the stress of what Christmas has evolved into.  I want very little to do with the holiday anymore.  It's nice to see the family and have a nice meal... maybe try to do something for those less fortunate.... but this frenzy over commercialism and materialism has wrung me out.  I haven't been back inside a shopping mall.... for 20 years (?).

CindyLouWho

Yes its like people just don't care anymore!

I know in my area, we have a help center that helps a lot of people with different things, food, clothing, gifts for kids, etc.  Also try calling around to different churches cause lot of them will help out, especially when there's kids.  And they may be able to also let you know of other help programs at other places.  Can't hurt to call & check.  Wish you lived close, we don't have a lot but would sure help where we could!!

mycatownsme

Reading some of these stories makes me so sad to see how people can be so mean and rude.
That is not what Christmas is about at all.
There are many good ideas of where to go and see what there is out there.
Just had a short ad on the television here that they are giving away food to anyone during certain hours yet today
and all you need to do is show a picture ID. Don't have to qualify as low income or anything like that,
It's just an honor system. If you need the food, it is there.I sure hope you find help just for a little something.
Let us know, ok? I don't know if Red Cross or Toys for Tots was mentioned also.
See what you can do and I hope your spirit with be lifted by the goodness of others with their caring.

Black Friday 2012 - Moultrie, GA Wal-Mart

** Volume Warning **

Nothing spoils a good story like the arrival of an eyewitness.

I watched this twice to be sure I was seeing what I was seeing.  no-no.gif

So glad I'm home and not out in that stuff.

I saw an awful lot of bullies and just rude and awful people.

Did anyone notice someone come up from behind an elderly lady and taking hold of her from behind and then another man put his hand over her mouth and push her behind him?  sad.gif

What is going on in our world anymore?  nono.gif  Lin  bad mood.gif

I did go to the Salvation Army and they are making sure

each of my kids get two things and food for the family.

Thanks for all the personal responses to my plight.

Welll...Daughter and I hit Walmart Thursday night and while it was crazy..we had a blast..The people waiting in our section for the 8 pm sale to start were fun happy and very upbeat. We all chatted and had a good time for the hour we stood waiting. And when we moved to the place to wait for the 10 pm electronics sale we wanted we had the same thing..We held each others spots for potty breaks etc....No ugliness any where that we saw. After walmart we went to a mall in Pensacola and hit Old Navy and it was pretty good too....No mean people just a couple rude ones... But I am in a small country town and maybe that made the difference. It was crowded and loud at times but we had a good time but any time I get to spend with my daughter always is.
