Heres a brain teaser for you guys. I tried tech forums but never got any responses. HP just told me "to have it looked at by a certified computer specialist". Typical response.  When I push the button to open my CD drive it makes a noise like its trying to open, but it don't. To get it to open I have to hit the top of my computer with my fist at the same time as I push the open button.  Then it only opens half way and closes before I can grab it. I have to keep doing this 10 or 15 times before I can get it to finally open all the way. I had a system figured out to where I rigged a string with a fishing weight above the computer and when I would hit it the string would fall at the same time it opened then I could pull the string and open it. Now it only openes a inch or so then closes. Not enough room for my string trick. If I have a CD in the drive already it opens with no assistance from my fist. I always forget to leave a CD in it at all times despite posted note I made to remind me. It's been doing this for 6 or 7 months now.  I have a HP 505n. Any suggestions?

That thought has crossed my mind, but it runs just like new. Never had a problem recording CDs or using CDs. Also, for the price it would would cost to send it to someone I could probably buy a new one.

Make sure you have power to the drive. This requires opening your case and checking the connections. I don't recommend you open it if it is under warranty. If you open the case under warranty you void the warranty.

If you do and it still won't open, then more than likely the drawer mechanism is broken. Some drives have a small little button one the front of the drive. Using a pin head or something, you can depress this and open the drive door.

Sounds like you need a new cd rom drive. Probably not a good idea for you to keep punching your pc. ;)

CD drives have pin release holes that let you open it even when the computer is turned off. It's a little hole usually becide the button you push to open the tray normally, about the size of a pin. Try turning off your computer and sticking a pin in there and see if it opens...

Ah, homer beat me too it!  :)

ok finally got to it, didn't want to stop my auto  :P I tried pushing the pin in. It opened about every 3rd time. Also, when it don't open it makes a sound like its trying to open but cant. Any suggestions to what might be wrong? The computer is out of warranty, I opted not to get the extended warranty to save 150$ Figured theres no point when it only cost me 299 on sale. :P I wouldn't have a problem opening the CD drive up and tinkering with it because I could always buy a new one if I screw it up...

Homer

You have 2 options.

  • Deal with it.
  • Buy a new drive.

I bought a win95 HP Pavilion for 3500$ 8 years ago (the setups cost more back then) never had to repair it once. I probably reformatted it 100+ times though. I still have it but only use it to play MP3's. Its like a CD player now. All the years that I used it I never even shut the thing down right, I would just push the power button. Tough lil sucker he was.

even though it's tough you always go to start and shut it down from their, I only use the button in case it freezes or won't load up any but it hasn't done that in a while so i'm fuine.
