SAN JOSE – A woman bit into a portion of a human finger while eating a bowl of chili at a Wendy's restaurant, health officials said.

Officials said the fingertip was about 1½ inches long and contained part of a manicured nail. The woman, who asked officials not to identify her, immediately spit it out, Santa Clara County Health Officer Martin Fenstersheib said.

"She was a bit grossed out it was described to me, and vomited a number of times," he said.

Health investigators seized all the ingredients at the restaurant and are tracing them back to their manufacturer. They believe the finger got into the chili at an earlier stage and was cooked at a high enough temperature to kill any viruses.

Wendy's spokesman Joe Desmond said the company was cooperating with the investigation.

"It's important not to jump to conclusions," he said. "Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by our customers."

Had me wondering what might be in my Wendy's lunch today. I skipped the chili. Love those tasty butgers.

That's a bit horrific thinking about that.  I saw the story last night on the news and had to laugh and grimace at, "She's expected to be okay as the finger was fully cooked".

Anyone remember the McDonald's mishap with the chicken sandwhich?  A woman ended up sick after eating one- it was thought to be a tumor in the chicken.

Our family was eating at a Ponderosa here in Michigan when my grandfather found a tooth in his corn.  I immediately complained to management (and rather loudly I might add) and they shoved about $100.00 of free dinners in my face to remedy the situation.  We don't eat there anymore. :-X

Being a former manager at a Ponderosa in New York, I can attest to that.  Want to go to a place where a majority of the time customers aren't given anything to remedy the situation...go there.  I've seen almost all of it, that's why I am no longer there.  My job was to try and shove gift certificates down people's throats when they had a problem, the GM or owner wouldn't even come out and face the customers.  I'd say 80% of the time, if the GM did come out from reading his paper or what have you, he'd just throw the people out of the restaurant.  On more than one occasion, I'd see customers leave in tears because of they way they were treated.  Except for one time, a guy got pissed at the way the GM talked to his wife and called the cops.  Heehee...needless to say, it started with a shoving match in the dining room and the GM ending up in the back of the trooper car.  I wanted to laugh so much, until they let the GM go without any reprimand.  I can't say all are like that but the one I worked at sucked.

I've worked in fast food for almost a decade and have seen most all of it. It's very hard to just go to these places and do your job without getting mixed up in their politics too.
I've seen the burger patties dropped on the floor and still served. I've seen the guy who takes out trash, empies mop bucket and doesn't wash hands. I've seen the nasty tomatoes and lettuce they serve that should have been tossed three days earlier. I've even seen the ones that spit in the orders.
Until working in that industry I was a fast foodalholic. I still chance it at times, but would much rather be able to go to back line and make the order myself. I always always always order my stuff plain from seeing the crusty ketchup and stuff on the squirt bottles.
The reality is employees are severely underpaid and the managers only care about sales charts. Most employees could care less about customer satisfaction. For $5.50 an hour who would when you're being expected to get 20 burgers into the bin a minute. Most managers would serve a dead rat with a smile if it put an extra buck in the till.  It's sad but true.
I was a great worker and always had a thing for keeping my station clean. I always got offered management positions and always turned them down. When you get into the politics of it, it goes downhill.
I used to have to make the late night bank deposits and briefly got fired and investigated for over $500 that wasn't in the bag next day. It was handed to me under lock and key and was clueless. Finally, it turned out the manager had stolen the money before I ever got the bag to begin with.
Fast food is an evil and chancy place when hungry. Sadly, this goes for most everything.

Stinky

Adric...
I have been in the fast food industry for over 17 years and yes I am a manager. I take great pride in what I do and what I serve. I suppose I am the minority. I have seen many managers only work for that "bonus". I do not. I share my bonus with my team. I started out in this business at the bottom. I made a little over three dollars an hour, so I know what it's like for the "hourlys".
I guess your post just got my nerve up. But that is what a forum is for..sharing opinions.

I wish I could have been working with you then Stinky O0. That's the way to have a great business relationship with your workers. I had some bad misfortunes in my time with fast food. I know it's not all bad and wasn't trying to imply otherwise.
With your time in the chain I'm sure you have seen what I was talking about as well. Good workers are very hard to find. When you have a good team, you have a successful business. You can usually walk into a place and tell right away if it's somewhere you'd eat.

That's why I tend to eat at Subway when out teaching or running around with my mother....atleast you can see them making your sub.  If they drop it and slap it back on, or spit, you can reach across the counter and slap them. ;D

Five minutes is too long to eat at Subway?  I don't think it's ever taken me longer than ten minutes to go in, get my sandwhich, and get out at the various SW's on my four hour round trip teaching.  I have spent longer than that in "fast" food drive-ups, and less time having a heart attack eating it. :D

No one has said how well the manicure was.If it was a good manicure, I am sure the finger did not come from a manufacturing shop, the rate of pay is so poor. Now if the nail was polished, well groomed and wearing jewelry(no one has mentioned that)...if this is the case has anyone looked for the rest of the body...You know it could be a mob hit...and everything tastes like chicken. I am only having the salad bar from now on until this is solved. And please stay away from the Catalina Dressing..the red colour could be a sign of a sinister act..

Thank Goodness..BBQ season is upon us!!

I just realized last night that the woman who found a finger in her chili lives about 5 minutes away from me here in Vegas. They did a search on her house yesterday because they think she might have put the finger there herself. They are doing DNA and fingerprint analysis on the entire family now.

Wendy's is also offering a $50,000 reward for identification of the finger.

"The woman who claims she bit into a human finger while eating chili at a Wendy's restaurant has a history of filing lawsuits _ including a claim against another fast-food restaurant.

Anna Ayala, 39, who hired a San Jose, Calif., attorney to represent her in the Wendy's case, has been involved in at least half a dozen legal battles in the San Francisco Bay area, according to court records."

I saw her on TV, too. Her daughter had her arm in a sling, claiming the cops beat her up durring the search. I'm starting to think this is gonna turn out to be some huge homicide case or something.

KMK92304

It is gonna be a huge scam. She is obviously lawsuit happy. The family that has been so open with the press is suddenly flipping the carema off... And they are telling the media to stay away from them and their property.

Adacia

From the way the cops have treated her I don't blame her a bit for being mad. They ransacked her apt or house. She claims they treated her and family like animals. One cop supposedly held her at gunpoint.  I have no problems believing that. If I had the media hounding me in such a way I'd be doing more than flipping the camera off.
I don't care if she's sued half the companies in the US. I don't think for one minute that she put that finger there. If she did, I will stand corrected. I hope she sues the police dept. and the media while she's at it.

In the meantime, they need to stop pointing 'fingers' and look the places where the chili originated from.  :o
