Why would they get rid of the nets? :-\
Attendences to hockey games has dropped enough already in the past few years. A lot of people wouldn't feel "safe" with the net gone, thus they wouldn't go to games, thus the attendence would drop even more. As you said, the nets are there to PROTECT the fans.
Unprotected fans = Tower ticket sales = Stadiums being shut down = No more NHL
