I remember when I was young and dumb (70's and 80's), with little kids, everything coming into the house got ScotchGuard-ed.  It did seem like a good idea at the time.  This announcement by 3M has since been made:

Scientists theorized that PFOS may block the formation of cholesterol, which is essential to biological development. On May 16, 2000, 3M voluntarily agreed to phase out production of Scotchgard within three years. The organic fluorine in Scotchgard is one of approximately 75,000 chemicals registered with the EPA.

My Google machine reveals that it's still on the market.

I'm with Squid, and it doesn't bear thinking about, for me.
Yes it most likely is chemicals, that can cause health issues. One has to look for no PFAS. 

I wouldn't want the spill on the carpet either, so then you would have to have mats on your floor. 

I recently bought a new couch and comes with a kit, that will repel the water , but he said unless you clean it up right away it would soak in eventually. Now I want to check what ingredients are in the kit before I use it. I just have covers on it for now.

I can picture it now, I'm sitting on my plastic couch and accidently spill my orange juice, and it beads up like mercury and rolls off the couch onto the carpet.  Perfect!
I'm with Squid, and it doesn't bear thinking about, for me.
