I guarentee people buy it. $499 is only $100 more than 360 (the non "core" version). Back when Xbox 1 was released ahead of PS2, people said what you're saying now. I think Sony did fine with PS2's higher price.

well this is one thing I can scratch off the hubby's x-mas list...maybe if it was the 399 it would be okay, but not for 499 or 599--and of course the games and the controllers--too much money

Regardless of the price, people will buy it. They have an "addiction" to the gaming world. They will make do without something else to get it.   :o

If they build it we will buy it. It's not that much money for a good gaming system. I have over 3 grand in my computer to play on POGO.  Sony will be selling the playstation 3 for less then half the cost to produce each unit in the beginning.  I love sony products the Quality is outstanding.

I will treat this like I did PS, xBox and any other game system out there: wait for the price to come down... REALLY come back. I spend more time playing my PC games anyway so there is no rush from me!

bad thing is

The cheaper version:
- No built-in Wi-fi
- No HDMI port
- No Memory Stick slot
- No SD card slot
- No Compact Flash slot
- 20GB hard drive

so if you buy the  500 model instead of the 600 buck on, your going to be end up spending a lot more then  600 bucks in the long run.   no   card slots really #$## on the cheaper model.

was doing some  research and noticed

When the  PS2  came out it only  cost  200 more then the ps1     (ps1  was  99    -- ps 2  was 299)
when the ps3 comes out it will run  almost 500 bucks to upgrade (ps2  99-129  -- Ps3   600)

on some other webpages it says if your looking to wait  till the system falls to 299 or 199  you will be waiting till probally  2010

their guesses

2006   system  600 bucks
2008  system  400-500
2010  System 200-300
2012  system  100-200

with ps 4  coming out  sometime between  2012-2014

It appears I'll be waiting until 2010 because I refuse to spend more money on a game system than I make my car payments for! Heck, it's almost up there with rent and I don't like paying that!

This will be the hot item for Christmas and I bet they will be sold out and unable to get for the last minute Christmas shoppers.  This is a item ( if you can afford ) to buy a few and save them for EBay. Thats where everyone goes when the stores are sold out and you would be surprised how much money people will pay for this. You could make a some extra money I am sure of it.

one word of  warning for people thinking about doing this.  Make sure  you can trust your buyer.  Many people got tons of  xbox 360 and sold them   for  800+  just to be hit with a chargeback a month later from  Paypal.   People were saying  someone used their credit card without premission.   Paypal  Will Side with the  BUYER   and you will be  Screwed  major  up the #$#$#$.

i personally know one person who sent an xbox360 for 750 bucks.  the dude said  system was messed up.  Paypal sided with the  BUYER  so my friend was out a  xbox360.

expect more and more of this to happen this season as more people cant get their hands on a system themself and will be going the ebay route trying to rip people off for a free system

Also, make sure if you buy one from eBay, you read the description. Remember this past Christmas... someone sold a xBox 360 BOX. It was clearly stated in the description and someone was stupid enough to pay $200 for an empty box. Here is a link to read about it: http://www.xbox365.com/news/news.cgi/article/EplVplAFFEPEqOpZkt9331

You do alot of things. Read the feedback on the person first of all.  Make sure you read everything on the ad. Look at the Shipping and Handling carefully.  Those are the main 3 things to look at.  But what I was saying is, if you can afford to buy a few of these up, I think you could make some money right before Christmas by selling them at a higher price.  Sony is putting them out  November 11th or 17th you said?  They will be sold out before Christmas. If anybody messes around on EBay they know what the hot items at Christmas will sell for.

I've been there with that stupid Elmo friggen doll thing one year. I payed double on Ebay because my kid just had to have it and you couldn't find them anywhere. Thank gawd I don't have to worry about toys anymore.  I will have to buy the PS3 for my daughter I already know. She loves Playstation and what a shame I just bought 13 games on Ebay for PS2 at Christmas.

Yikes....thanks for the heads up on that Hippo. Although eBay is a great place to shop, you have to be very careful. What can look like a really good deal sometimes doesn't turn out that way. I can't remember exactly what it was I was going to purchase, at a very reasonable price. I then checked out the shipping charges and it was $50. That was more than the item was worth. I also do what Tara said, read the seller's history.

another bad thing about selling on ebay...

say  you go out and buy the PS3  for  600 bucks and sell it on ebay for 1000.   if the item gets lost or broken the post office will only give you 600 bucks back and it will take up to  6 months to get that money back (if you have a claim though the post office)

your going to see a lot of people saying  they never gave permission for someone to use their credit card and paypal will screw you over big time.    I say if you do sell these systems i would only take a cashiers check and  CASH IT before sending the system.

Expect major shortages of the system since    its going to be a world wide release in nov

In terms of the post office, you can choose how much you're insuring the item for and if something happens during that time, you get back how much you've chosen. It does take time but I ran into an issue where this did occur. I only insured it for $100 and I didn't even know it was broken. They called me and said they accidentally dropped it and then fell on it. I didn't care if it was broken or not because it was useless stuff but they offered to give me the money. I tried to work with them and ask if I could just have $100 worth of shipping free but they said they didn't do that. So I took the $100, told the person what happened and refunded them their money.

Anyway, back to the original reason why I hit reply, it just depends on what you insure it for.

This seems to be a no win situation. You can get burned on either end (buyer/seller). I guess it's best to wait until you can get it at the store yourself, even if you're not the 1st kid on the block to have it.

Unfortunately me and my hubby will be idiots and buy it, we bought ps2, when it first came out and always had problems with it (yes we were stupid and didn't get warranty) so within the last year we bought another ps2 (with warranty), we have almost 100 games, some costing 50 a pop, so we have spent alot on playstation, my son who's six plays it the most, along with my hubby, and I just know my son will want it and get it. sad yes, but my hubby tends to spoil him as he is our only son and the only child of the two of us, we each have a daughter from others, since he never had been with a child from birth(long story ex didn't let him see his child for long time--but now we have full custody!) he tends to cling to our son and give him what he wants most of the time, so I can guarantee we will have the most expensive ps3 when it comes out, sad so very sad I could spoil myself quite abit with that amount of money  :'( !!!!

I hear what you're saying about spoiling yourself a little. Just in the games alone you have close to $5000 tied up.  :x

sony told the offical prices at  their  E3 party  monday.   they will be   499  and  599..  Your better off getting the 599 cause the  499  is just junk (its missing way too much stuff)

ironically in my local newspaper today was an article titled
"how much would you pay for a ps3?

and it said the pricetag was going to be the $499 and $599 for the PS3. It goes on to talk about how Sony is overpricing people and is really pushing customers to their limits on how much they want to spend for a game console.

It makes the Xbox 360 look like a bargain now!

the 360 is nothing compared to ps3 so although cheaper its still lower quality by far.
