Bonds Passes Babe With Home Run No. 715

San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds swings on his two-run ...
SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds stands alone at No. 715. He hit the milestone home run with a two-run shot to center Sunday, moving past Babe Ruth into sole possession of second place on the career list behind Hank Aaron.

Bonds homered off Colorado's Byung-Hyun Kim and before his home fans _ where he wanted to do it all along _ and before the San Francisco Giants head on a road trip.

The ball landed on an elevated platform beyond the center field fence and was not immediately retrieved. He circled the bases as streamers fell from the upper deck.

He'll never be #2 in my eyes. How appropriate that a sport named baseball doesn't have the balls to put people like Bonds in their place. Bud Selig is a jackass.

i'll still take the babe over bonds anyday, some people forget that in also hitting 714 homers he also had a pitching record of 90 something wins and only like 40 losses O0

Tara

I don't think hes anything in anyones eyes anymore actually.

Blu

I like Barry, always have. People never get on McGuire or Sosa or Palmeiro (who even tested positive) like they ridicule Bonds. Look at these three and their all-time home run ranks:
Rank     Player           Total
5    Sammy Sosa    588
7    Mark McGwire     583
9    Rafael Palmeiro   569

I'm not saying he wasn't juiced, but come on...quit singling him out America.

hades

all of ruths career avgs far surpass bonds in every way.bonds should just sit on his own website all day where he tries selling his stuff for high prices...he isnt half as great as he thinks he is.  :)

Sports Illustrated Power Ranking: Team Break Down

02.) Chicago White Sox
The Sox lost two of three to the Jays over the weekend, and after Saturday's loss, manager Ozzie Guillen offered up one of his profanity-punched speeches to his troops. "If they don't like what I say, [bleep] them," he said. "They can pack their [stuff] and do whatever they want to do." Then the Sox won Sunday. Hey, if it works ...

06.) New York Yankees
Did Alex Rodriguez really lose track of his three-run homer against the Red Sox? Was Boston's Manny Ramirez preening a little too much after his homer against the Yanks early last week? Well, at least we don't have to deal with all this silly, overblown Red Sox-Yankees stuff again until ... what? Next week? Again?

08.) Los Angeles Dodgers
Word out of Las Vegas -- and, really, this could have come from anywhere -- is that catcher Pat Borders, 43, finally has retired. The '92 World Series MVP was playing with the Dodgers' Class AAA team in Vegas, the 51s, when he decided to officially hang 'em up. After 17-plus years, with 10 teams. That's a man who loves the game. Or has nothing else to do.

17.) Philadelphia Phillies
Leadoff man Jimmy Rollins had been struggling so badly (.192 since April 19) that manager Charlie Manuel dropped him to sixth in the order. When he got his leadoff spot back Saturday, Rollins had a pair of doubles and a homer. But the Phils still lost, and now have dropped nine of 12 after winning 12 of 13 to start the month.

18.) Houston Astros
Lance Berkman's knee is hurting, but it's nothing compared to the pain of losing an 18-inning game Saturday night to ... the Pirates. "It's frustrating because we're playing absolutely crappy ball," manager Phil Garner said at one point during a 2-5 week. Crappier than the Pirates? Now that's scary.

19.) Cleveland Indians
Losing two of three to the Tigers over the weekend should tell the Indians exactly where they stand. Or, if they prefer, they can check the standings. They'll find that they're a game below .500, eight behind the White Sox, 10 1/2 behind the Tigers ... and, even this early, quickly running out of time

22.) Baltimore Orioles
Oh, the O's have some problems. Erik Bedard is 1-3 in six May starts with a 7.85 ERA. Kris Benson's ERA is over 6.00 for the month. Rodrigo Lopez's is almost as bad as Bedard's. If Leo Mazzone has any wisdom to impart, now might be a good time to do some imparting. If it's not too late. Which it probably is.

24.) Seattle Mariners
The Mariners ran themselves into a triple play and had the bases loaded with no outs three times in two games -- and scored just one run. That calls for the newspaper lede of the week, courtesy of Bob Finnigan of the Seattle Times. "If this keeps up, the Mariners will have to issue little white bags to fans attending their games." Ewww
